Tempestuous, Acrylic, 16"x20", $320

These poured acrylics  are fun and almost always turn out different than what you intended when you started. Some see a stormy sea, others a mountain with a waterfall. This painting is in Encantada, the annual exhibition of the Rio Grande Art Association at the Hispanic Arts Building at Expo New Mexico. The show opens with a reception on Friday, October 5 from 6-8 pm. Regular hours are Thursday - Sunday, 10-5 pm.

Canyon Colors, Watercolor, 17"x21", $310

I switch back and forth between watercolor and acrylic. This watercolor is an interpretation of a formation in Canyon de Chelly. Stand in front of any rock formation for long and you will see all kinds of patterns, shapes and even faces. This painting was influenced by Wayne Thiebaud’s mountain paintings which almost give you a sense of vertigo with their scale.

My studio space isn’t fancy. This is a 12x14 ft bedroom converted to the studio which I share with my cat. I covered the carpet with tarp and then put up plastic on one wall where I paint large work. Supplies are in pull out drawers and on shelves in the closet. One table is for painting and the other is where I frame. There is nice southern light supplemented with fluorescent. The half bath gives water nearby. I try to be in the studio by 9 though this is easier in the winter than the summer when the garden beckons. The secret is to paint regularly and keep the creative juices flowing.

Delft Mountain, Acrylic, 12"x12", $150

This is an acrylic pour. Marbling is the most common effect you get when pouring but you can get some control as I did in Canyon Sunset posted on 8/28/17.

Rebirth, 21"x16", Watercolor

This is my first watercolor abstract. It is very freeing to work large. My approach was to pour some paint and use a large brush in other areas. Salt gave texture. Mark making was done with palette knife and dripping. After the initial colors were dry, it was a matter of defining edges to give depth. What do you think of it?

Which Way is UP?

Intrigued with repetition of patterns, I photograph a lot of shadows. It paid off this month as this photo won First Place in the Assigned category of the Shadow and Light competition at the Enchanted Lens Camera Club.
